When the fisherman’s figure is pushed backward one of the fishes instantly disgorges a “butt” STRUGGLING with his catch this comic fisherman seems to be fighting a pretty hopeless battle. Give him a little help by tilting him backward and he will reward you with a cigarette delivered through the mouth of one of the fishes. He will continue to deliver cigarettes one at a time till the magazine of thirteen is empty. Although any kind of wood may be used for making this novelty hardwood is better for the sides ends and top of the box. Softwood preferably white pine is used for the figures and the ejector as it is easy to work. The ends and sides of the box (see the drawings near the end of the article) are constructed of 1/2 by 2-3/8-in stock the sides being 7-1/2 in long and the ends 4-3/4 in. The corner joints are cut as shown. When these pieces are fitted together the outside measurements should be 7-1/2 by 5-1/4 in. A groove 3/16 in wide and 1/4 in deep is cut at an angle in the end pieces to take the bottom piece which is of 3/16-in plywood 7 in long. The width is cut to fit and the edges are beveled to meet the sides of the box. The box is not glued till later. The top is of 1/2-in stock. 7-1/2 by 5-1/4 in. A rabbet 3/16 in deep and 1/2 in wide is cut around the underside of the block and the two small openings shown are cut out with the scroll saw. The head of the fisherman is made on the lathe the hat head and nose being turned in one piece. It should be sanded to a smooth finish. The figure should be drawn on 1/2-in wood and scroll-sawed to shape. A 3/16-in metal dowel joins the head and body. A 1/4-in wide groove is cut in the bottom of the figure to take the pivot piece. The latter is of 1/4-in stock shaped as in the drawing to fit the hole in the top of the box. The fisherman and the pivot piece should be drilled for the pivot which is a small brad. A 1/8-in hole should be drilled for the 1/8-in drill rod or wire that represents the fishing rod. This wire should be securely cemented in place. The fish is scroll-sawed from 1/2-in wood a 1/4-in groove is cut in the bottom and a 1/8 in hole is drilled for the fishline. The pulley is turned from hardwood and is pivoted with a brad in line with the 1/8-in hole. The pivot piece for the fisherman and the fish can now be glued in place. The slide and the guide are sawed to shape and the guide is nailed or screwed to the side-piece of the box as shown. A small screw to which the line is attached is placed in the slide in the position indicated. A 5/16-in hole through which the cigarette is to be ejected is now drilled. The box is then glued together. A small tack is driven into the slide and another into the bottom of the box over which a small rubber band is slipped to return the slide after each stroke. The dividing piece must be cut to fit and it may be necessary to cut a rabbet at the bottom to allow clearance for the tack in the slide. A heavy piece of fishline is tied to the screw in the slide passed around the pulley carried up through the hole in the fish and tied to the fishing pole. The magazine is filled with cigarettes and the ejector tested. It may be necessary to enlarge the ejector hole. The fish heads are cut from 1-in wood and a 3/8-in hole is drilled in the head that covers the ejector hole. These are glued in place. A dark brown varnished surface is best for the box. The fish are painted a light green with red mouths black eyes and black-trimmed fins. The fisherman’s suit is white face pink mouth red and hair hat pole suit trimmings and the outline of his eyes and ears are black. The whites of his eyes are pure white. "Cigarette smoking may accelerate disability in multiple sclerosis" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-25 01:30:18

The results are based on magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of smokers and nonsmokers in 368 MS patients treated in UB's Jacobs Neurological Institute the university's Department of Neurology in its School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Results of the research were presented (Oct. 13. 2007) at the 23rd Congress of the European Committee for the Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis in Prague. Czech Republic. "Cigarette smoke has many properties that are toxic to the central nervous system and cigarette smoking has been linked to higher susceptibility and assay of progressive multiple sclerosis," said Robert Zivadinov. M. D.. Ph. D.. UB professor of neurology director of the BNAC and first author on the study. "Interactions between cigarette smoking and genetic and immunologic factors may point to mechanisms in disease pathogenesis. No previous studies have investigated differences in MRI characteristics between MS cigarette smokers and MS nonsmokers," he said. The study included patients from the three most common forms of MS: 253 had relapsing-remitting MS -- acute attacks with full or partial recovery; nine had primary-progressive MS -- steady worsening from onset; and 90 had secondary-progressive MS characterized by occasional attacks and sustained progression. Another 16 participants had experienced their first MS onset. Patients ranged in age from 35-55 years and had been living with MS for an average of 13 years. The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) an average number derived from measures of various functions of the central nervous system based on scales ranging from 0 to 10 was 3.1. The higher the number the greater the disability. Within the study cohort. 128 had a history of smoking: 96 were active smokers who had smoked more than 10 cigarettes-per-day in the three months prior to the study start and 32 were former smokers who had smoked cumulatively for at least 6 months sometime in the past. The remaining 240 participants had no active smoking exposure. The average smoking duration was 17.6 years and the average number of cigarettes smoked per day was 17. There were no significant differences between smokers and nonsmokers based on age disease duration disease course and total lifetime use of disease-modifying drugs. Analysis and comparison of the MRIs from smokers and nonsmokers showed that the smokers had significantly higher disability scores and lower brain volume than the nonsmokers. There also was a significant relationship between a higher number of packs-per-day smoked and lower volume of the neocortex the portion of the cerebral cortex that serves as the center of higher mental functions for humans. There were no significant differences in any of the clinical findings between active and former smokers. "Smoking appears to influence the severity of MS and to deepen hit atrophy and the disruption of the blood-brain barrier in MS patients," said Zivadinov. "MS patients should be counseled to stop smoking or at least to cut down so they can hold as much brain function as possible." Additional researchers on the study all from the BNAC or the JNI were Milena Stosic. M. D.. Nadir Abdelrahman. M. D.. Barbara E. Teter. Ph. D.. Frederick E. Munschauer. M. D.. Sara Hussein. Jackie Durfee. Michael G. Dwyer. Jennifer L. Cox. Ph. D.. Nima Hani. Fernando Nussenbaum and Bianca Weinstock-Guttman. M. D. Would you desire to for our weekly ? "Discrimination seen in cigarette seizures" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:44:34

After reading "State will not channel stats on cigarette seizures" [Oct. 14]. I would like someone to answer a question for me. Since the express Department of Revenue has taken a stance against bringing more than two cartons of cigarettes across state lines and being one of those that be here in Clarksville-Fort Campbell: Is the Revenue Department going to enforce this law on those that acquire their cigarettes at the Fort Campbell Commissary or on federal property? I experience for a fact that many retirees buy 10 to 12 cartons of cigarettes at a time because they may only shop once a month. I feel this is a legitimate question for those of us that are not retired and can't purchase on federal government property. Would it not be considered discrimination since we all experience that they are not going to mess with the federal government? The law is the law and if it is going to be implemented then it should bear on to all not just a few. I find the Tennessee law to be unconstitutional as they undergo elected to decide only what that want when in fact the Bureau of Alcohol. Tobacco and Firearms was set up to cover just this. If it's illegal to acquire more than two cartons of cigarettes then the limit on purchasing ammunition and firearms in another state should be dealt with in the same manner. After all tax money is what it's all about !!
